An unpublished mystery coin
Lot 1421
UNCERTAIN. 4th-3rd centuries BC (?). Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.48 g, 12 h). Head and neck of a bull to left; above, uncertain inscription. Rev. Dolphin swimming to right; above AΔI (?). Apparently unpublished, a mystery coin. The obverse struck somewhat off center, otherwise, very fine.

The origin of this enigmatic piece is difficult to determine. This cataloguer is unaware of any comparable examples, and the inscription on the reverse - tentatively interpreted here as AΔI - provides no further clarity. While bulls and dolphins are common motifs on coins, they are not typically found on small silver pieces, especially not with a bull protome or accompanied by such cryptic legends. The piece may originate from the Black Sea region or the Levant, though other origins remain entirely possible.
